ended his time in the White House with a farewell address that is widely regarded as one of the greatest speeches made by an American president. He warned Americans against the “military-industrial complex”, a phrase that he coined. He also said: “As we peer into society’s future, we – you and I, and our government – must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering, for our own ease and convenience, the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage.” Louise Hidalgo looks back on the speech with Dwight Eisenhower’s grandson, David Eisenhower, and one of his speechwriters, Stephen Hess. In particular, the Axis declaration of war enabled an operation that the Germans believed was key to driving Britain out of the conflict; a concerted submarine attack against U.S. commercial shipping.</p> </div> </li> </ul> <!-- LOAD MORE --> <div class="actions_container"> <div class="inside"> <button class="load_more desktop m_off" type="button" when-visible="up">Load more</button> <button class="load_more mobile m_on" type="button" when-visible="up">Load more</button> <a class="to_past_headlines m_off" href="./archives/headlines/" when-visible="up">To Headlines Archives</a> </div> <!-- AJAX QUERY --> <script type="text/javascript"> var ajax_url = "https://ihr.org/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php"; var page = 2; jQuery(function($) { $('body').on('click', '.col_left .load_more', function() { var button = $(this); var is_mobile_request = button.hasClass('mobile') var data = { 'action': 'load_more_news_comments', 'page': page, 'security': '3279d8ec61' }; if(is_mobile_request) { data.action = 'load_more_news_comments_mobile' } $.ajax({ url : ajax_url, // AJAX handler data : data, type : 'POST', beforeSend : function ( xhr ) { button.text("Loading..."); }, success : function( res ){ if (!res) { button.remove(); return true; } if(is_mobile_request) { $('.posts_left.mobile').append(res); if ( page == 757 ) { button.remove(); // if last page } } else { $('.posts_left.desktop').append(res); if ( page == 152 ) { button.remove(); // if last page } } button.text("Load more"); // insert new posts page++; } }); }); }); </script> </div> </div> </div> <!-- end col_left --> <div class="col_right"> <!-- SMALL APPEAL NOTICES --> <div class="small_appeal_notice_container"> <h2 class="title">Did You Know the IHR is a Nonprofit?</h2> <div class="text_container format"> <p class="paragraph0">That means our work depends entirely on support from men and women like you.</p> <p class="paragraph0"><span lang="EN">Because the Institute is recognized by the IRS as a not-for-profit public interest educational enterprise, your donation is tax-deductible. </span>If you value what the IHR stands for, now is the time to show it.</p> </div> <a class="link" href="./support">Make a secure online donation</a> </div> <div class="section_title_container"> <h2 class="section_title">IHR News & Views</h2> </div> <!-- PROMOTED ITEM FIRST POSITION --> <!-- WEEKLY ROUNDUP --> <div class="promoted_item_container wr"> <div class="inside"> <div class="article_header" when-visible="fade"> <a href="https://ihr.org/audio/weekly-roundup/" class="title_container"> <h2 class="post_title">Weekly Roundup with Mark Weber</h2> </a> </div> <img src="https://ihr.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/wr_thumb_4-aspect-ratio-1106-1184-467x500.jpg" alt="Weekly Roundup with Mark Weber" loading="lazy" when-visible="fade"> <div class="text_container " when-visible="fade"> <p>Historian Mark Weber and host Fróði Midjord provide informed “big picture” perspective on current events, highlighting the broader trends and crucial factors behind the headlines.</p> </div> </div> </div> <!-- PROMOTED ITEM SECOND POSITION --> <!-- MAILING LIST --> <div class="mailing_list_container" when-visible="fade"> <div class="inside"> <div class="icon"> <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" height="1em" viewBox="0 0 512 512"><path d="M403.7 477.5L289.5 429.9l-37.7 65.9c-7.2 12.6-22 18.8-36 15.1s-23.8-16.4-23.8-30.9V389.3L19.7 317.5C8.4 312.8 .8 302.2 .1 290s5.5-23.7 16.1-29.8l7.9 13.9c-5.3 3-8.4 8.8-8 14.9s4.2 11.4 9.8 13.8l168.9 70.4L479.6 16c-2.6 .1-5.2 .8-7.6 2.1l-448 256-7.9-13.9 448-256c8.3-4.7 18-5.5 26.7-2.3c2.5 .9 5 2.2 7.3 3.7c1.3 .9 2.5 1.8 3.6 2.8c.9 .8 1.7 1.6 2.4 2.5c6.1 7 9 16.5 7.5 25.9l-64 416c-1.5 9.7-7.4 18.2-16 23s-18.9 5.4-28 1.6zm-193.6-98l85.5 35.6c0 0 0 0 .1 0l114.2 47.6c4.5 1.9 9.7 1.6 14-.8s7.2-6.7 8-11.5l64-416c.6-3.7-.2-7.4-2-10.5L210.1 379.5zM208 396v84c0 7.3 4.9 13.6 11.9 15.5s14.4-1.2 18-7.5l36.7-64.2L208 396z"/></svg> </div> <a href="https://ihr.org/contact/subscribe/"> <h3 class="title">Join our Mailing List</h3> </a> <div class="text"><p>Several times each week we distribute by e-mail a timely “IHR News and Comment” roundup of news, analysis and commentary items. Of the four or five most often voiced complaints, the most common is over mass migration from other countries and continents, and how that has drastically changed British life, culture and society … “The men who offered their lives have been betrayed and gave their lives in vain. The most far-reaching and flagrant case was by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1940-41. In the months before the US formally entered the war in the wake of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt did everything he could to get America into the global conflict without actually declaring war. The cooperation with British intelligence by the President and other high-ranking US officials during that period was quite illegal. Prison camps on both sides produced scenes of wretched, disease-ridden and emaciated prisoners as repulsive as any to come out of the Second World War … In addition to camps for captured soldiers, the North also established concentration camps for civilian populations considered hostile to the Federal government.</p> </p> </div> </li> <li when-visible="fade" class="news_and_views"> <div class="article_header"> <a href="https://ihr.org/news/darkesthour" class="title_container" target=""> <h2 class="post_title">`Darkest Hour’: Great Movie, Defective History </h2> </a> <p class="author">Mark Weber</p> </div> <img src="https://ihr.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Sir_Winston_Churchill_-_the_Roaring_Lion_colorisee-364x500.jpg" alt="`Darkest Hour’: Great Movie, Defective History " loading="lazy"> <div class="text_container "> <p><p>… While it’s an artistic achievement and grand entertainment, “Darkest Hour” is badly flawed history … “Darkest Hour” reinforces the widespread belief that Churchill’s speeches played a crucial role in sustaining British morale.
